How to manage your EV charger's power setting and why it matters in India

A practical guide to current adjustment, scheduled charging, and getting the most out of your ZEVpoint charger at home.

Charging an electric vehicle at home sounds straightforward plug in and go. But if you live in an older apartment, a residential society, or a home with limited wiring, things can get complicated quickly. ZEVpoint chargers are built with exactly these situations in mind. Two features, in particular, make a real difference: power adjustment and scheduled charging. Here's how each one works and when to use them.


Power Adjustment: Reduce Current When Other Appliances Are Running

Every ZEVpoint charger lets you manually reduce the charging current. Running the AC and geyser together? You can turn down the charger's power so your home circuit doesn't get overloaded.

Why This Matters

Most Indian homes have a sanctioned load of 3 kW to 5 kW. A standard EV charger at 32A draws around 7.5 kW, which is already more than your home's total limit, before any other appliance is even switched on. If the total draw exceeds your sanctioned limit, your main MCB trips.

Drop it from 32A to 24A, and your load goes from 7.5 kW to 5.5 kW enough room for your AC and lights to run without tripping anything.

How to Adjust It

You can change the current in two ways: either using the physical button on the charger itself or through the ZEVpoint home app. The app shows your real-time power consumption, so you can see exactly how much load is currently on your connection and adjust accordingly.

Quick Tip

Not sure what your home's sanctioned load is? Check your electricity bill — it's listed under "contracted demand" or "sanctioned load." If you're unsure, you can check it with your electrician.


Scheduled Charging-Charge When Electricity Is Cheaper

ZEVpoint chargers let you delay your charging session, you don't have to start charging the moment you plug in; you can plug your car in at 7 PM and have it start charging at 11 PM.

Why Does Timing Matter?

In most Indian homes, evenings are the busiest time on the electrical system ACs, TVs, geysers, and cooking appliances all running together between 6 PM and 10 PM. That's when your home circuit is already under the most stress. Charging on top of that is just adding more pressure.

By 11 PM, most appliances are off, the load on your home circuit is low, and charging runs smoothly without competing with anything else. The charger can run at a comfortable speed through the night.

In the ZEVpoint app, you can set a specific start time or a simple delay like "start in 4 hours." There's also a weekly schedule so weekdays and weekends can be set differently.

When to Call an Electrician

These features help you work within your current electrical setup but they're not a fix for wiring that genuinely needs an upgrade. Consider calling a licensed electrician if:

  • You notice warm or discolored switchboards or sockets
  • Your home wiring is older than 15–20 years
  • You're planning to add another charger

An electrician can check your panel's rated capacity, wiring gauge, and earthing and tell you exactly what current your setup can safely handle on a sustained basis.
