EV Charging Basics

What is an EV car charger?

An EV car charger is an electrical device designed to safely supply power to an electric vehicle and recharge its battery. Think of it like a fuel pump, but for electricity. They come in different power levels suited for home, workplace, or commercial use.

How does an electric car charge at home in India?

An electric car charges at home using an AC charger, which supplies electricity to the car. Inside the car, an onboard charger (OBC) converts this AC power into DC, which the battery can store. For most Indian EV owners, home charging is the most convenient and economical option.

What is the difference between AC charging and DC fast charging?

AC chargers send power to your car's built-in onboard converter — slower but affordable, ideal for overnight home use. DC chargers bypass the onboard converter entirely, feeding power directly to the battery at much higher speeds — perfect for highway stops and commercial locations.

Who decides the charging speed — the charger or the car?

Both play a role! The actual charging speed is determined by the lower value between what the charger can supply and what the car's onboard charger can accept. For example, if your car supports 7.2kW AC charging but you use a 3.6kW charger, the speed will be limited to 3.6kW.

Is it safe to charge my EV every day at home?

Absolutely. EV chargers have multiple built-in safety features including ground fault protection, overcurrent protection, and temperature monitoring. Daily home charging is perfectly safe and is actually the recommended way to keep your EV topped up for everyday commutes.

What are Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chargers?

Level 1 uses a standard household outlet (2.3kW) — very slow but needs no special setup. Level 2 chargers (3.6–22kW) are the most popular for homes and offices, requiring a dedicated circuit. Level 3 (DC fast chargers, 25kW–350kW) are for commercial/highway use and can charge to 80% in 20–45 minutes.

What connector types are used in India?

In India, the most common connectors are Type 2 (Mennekes) for AC charging and CCS2 (Combined Charging System) for DC fast charging. Some older models may use CHAdeMO. All Zevpoint chargers use the widely compatible Type 2 / CCS2 standard.

Can I use a regular power socket to charge my EV?

Technically yes, but it's not recommended for regular use. Standard 5A/15A sockets charge extremely slowly (8–20+ hours for a full charge) and may not have adequate earthing or circuit protection. A dedicated EV charger is safer, faster, and designed for daily use.

What is the typical range added per hour of charging?

With a Level 2 home charger (7.2kW), most EVs gain about 35–50 km of range per hour. A 3.6kW charger adds about 15–25 km/hour. DC fast chargers can add 150–300 km in just 30 minutes depending on the car and charger power.

What happens if it rains while my car is charging?

EV chargers and vehicle charge ports are designed to be waterproof (IP66 rated for Zevpoint chargers). Charging in rain is completely safe. The connectors have multiple layers of insulation and the system automatically shuts down if it detects any moisture-related anomaly.

Installation & Safety

Can I install an EV charger at my apartment or housing society?

Yes! Many apartments and housing societies across India are now EV-friendly. You'll need permission from your RWA or management committee. Zevpoint helps with the entire process — site survey, proposal preparation, electrical assessment, and installation. We handle the paperwork so you don't have to.

Do I need special wiring or electrical upgrades?

Most home chargers require a dedicated 30A circuit with proper earthing. An electrician can typically set this up in a day. Zevpoint offers a free site survey to assess your existing electrical setup and recommend the optimal configuration — no surprises, no hidden costs.

How long does installation take?

A standard home installation takes about 2–4 hours. For commercial setups with multiple charging stations, it typically takes 1–2 days depending on the number of units and electrical work required. We schedule at your convenience and minimize disruption.

What safety standards do Zevpoint chargers follow?

All Zevpoint chargers are BIS certified and comply with Indian electrical safety standards. They include ground fault protection, overcurrent protection, temperature monitoring, and IP66 weather resistance. They automatically shut off if anything unusual is detected.

Can I install multiple chargers in my office or parking lot?

Absolutely. Zevpoint specializes in multi-charger commercial setups with smart load balancing. This means the chargers dynamically share available power so you don't need massive electrical upgrades. Perfect for office buildings, malls, hotels, and gated communities.

What electrical load does a home charger add?

A 3.6kW charger adds roughly the same load as a large AC unit. A 7.2kW charger is comparable to two ACs running simultaneously. Most Indian homes with a 5–10kW sanctioned load can accommodate a home charger with minor adjustments. We assess this during the free site survey.

Do I need to upgrade my electricity meter?

In most cases, no. If your sanctioned load is 5kW or above, a 3.6kW charger works without any meter changes. For 7.2kW chargers or if your current load is close to capacity, a load enhancement request to your DISCOM may be needed. Zevpoint handles this process.

Is outdoor installation possible?

Yes. Zevpoint chargers are IP66 rated, meaning they're fully protected against dust and powerful water jets. They're designed for both indoor parking and open-air installations. We recommend a small canopy for extreme weather areas, but it's not mandatory.

What is load balancing for multiple chargers?

Load balancing distributes available electrical power across multiple chargers intelligently. If 4 chargers share a 22kW supply, the system dynamically allocates power based on each vehicle's needs and priority, ensuring everyone charges without tripping your main breaker.

Do commercial installations need a separate meter?

For public/commercial charging stations, a dedicated commercial electricity meter is recommended. This allows for separate billing, EV-specific tariffs (which many DISCOMs now offer at lower rates), and clean accounting for your charging business.

Smart App & Features

What is OCPP and why does it matter?

OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) is an open communication standard that allows EV chargers to connect with any compatible management software. Without OCPP, you might be locked into a single vendor's ecosystem. With Zevpoint's OCPP-compliant chargers, you get full flexibility and future-proofing.

What smart features do Zevpoint chargers have?

Our chargers include remote monitoring via the Zevpoint Home App, scheduled charging (set it to start during off-peak hours), energy usage tracking and reports, automatic load balancing for multi-charger setups, and over-the-air firmware updates. Set it and forget it.

Can I control my charger from my phone?

Yes! The Zevpoint Home App (available on Google Play and App Store) lets you start/stop charging, set schedules, track energy consumption, monitor charging status in real-time, and get notifications when your car is fully charged.

Can I schedule charging for off-peak hours?

Yes. Through the Zevpoint app, you can set a charging schedule so your car only charges during off-peak electricity hours (typically 10 PM – 6 AM). This can save you 20–40% on your charging costs depending on your DISCOM's time-of-day tariff.

Does the app show energy usage and cost?

The Zevpoint app provides detailed energy reports — daily, weekly, and monthly. It shows kWh consumed, estimated cost based on your electricity rate, and carbon offset compared to petrol driving. Great for tracking your savings.

What does OCPP 1.6 vs 2.0 mean?

OCPP 1.6 is the current industry standard, supporting basic smart charging features. OCPP 2.0 adds enhanced security, better device management, and ISO 15118 support for plug-and-charge. Zevpoint chargers support OCPP 1.6J with a roadmap for 2.0 firmware updates.

Can I set a charge limit (e.g., stop at 80%)?

Yes. The Zevpoint app lets you set a charge limit percentage. Most EV experts recommend capping daily charging at 80% for optimal battery longevity, and only charging to 100% before long trips.

Will I get notified when charging is complete?

Yes. Push notifications alert you when charging starts, when it reaches your set limit, and if any issue is detected. You can also enable email summaries of your weekly charging activity.

Usage, Cost & Ownership

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?

Home charging is remarkably affordable — typically 70–80% cheaper than petrol. Most Indian EV owners spend around ₹1–2 per kilometer. Charging overnight during off-peak hours can reduce costs even further. Average monthly cost: ₹800–1,500 for typical daily commutes.

Why is home charging recommended for most EV owners in India?

Home charging is the most convenient and cost-effective option. You plug in overnight and wake up to a full battery — no detours to charging stations. It's also gentler on your battery compared to frequent DC fast charging, and significantly cheaper per unit of electricity.

Should I charge to 100% every time?

For everyday use, charging to 80% is actually better for your battery's long-term health. Only charge to 100% before long road trips. Zevpoint smart chargers let you set a charge limit so it stops automatically at your preferred level.

Are there government subsidies available for EV chargers?

Yes, several state and central government schemes offer subsidies for EV charger installation — both residential and commercial. The FAME-II scheme and various state EV policies provide significant incentives. Zevpoint helps identify applicable subsidies and handles the paperwork.

How much can I save monthly compared to petrol?

On average, EV owners save ₹3,000–8,000 per month compared to petrol vehicles. If you drive 1,000 km/month, petrol costs roughly ₹6,000–8,000 while home charging costs only ₹1,000–1,500. The savings increase with higher mileage.

What maintenance does an EV charger need?

Very little! Keep the connector clean and dry when not in use, check the cable for visible damage periodically, and ensure the mounting is secure. Zevpoint chargers run self-diagnostics and will alert you through the app if any maintenance is needed.

What is the lifespan of a home EV charger?

A quality EV charger like Zevpoint's is designed to last 8–10+ years with normal use. The key components (electronics, relay, cable) are rated for 10,000+ charging cycles. That's roughly 25+ years of daily charging.

What state-level subsidies are available?

Many states offer additional incentives: Delhi provides up to ₹6,000 subsidy on home chargers, Maharashtra waives road tax, Karnataka and Gujarat have special EV tariffs. Policies change frequently — contact Zevpoint for the latest applicable subsidies in your state.

Is it cheaper to charge at home or at a public station?

Home charging is almost always cheaper. Residential electricity rates are ₹4–8/kWh, while public charging stations charge ₹12–25/kWh. Home charging at off-peak rates can be 3–5x cheaper than public fast charging.

Does frequent fast charging damage the battery?

Occasional DC fast charging is fine, but relying on it exclusively can degrade battery health faster due to heat generation. For daily use, Level 2 AC home charging is gentler on the battery. Think of it like this: fast charging is for trips, home charging is for daily life.
